Description
My first trip to Scotland was spent almost entirely in and near Edinburgh, but for the second trip, I was determined to see the famous Scottish Highlands. The highlands are known for their raw natural beauty, and even though it was winter, that beauty literally shined through for me.
The days this far north are quite short in winter, but when the sun comes out, it's staggering how beautiful it is. I have theories about the low angle of the sun, but maybe it's a mental thing that the sun is appreciated more when it shines?
Whatever the case, on my first day in the highlands, we pulled off near Loch Tulla near Bridge of Orchy on our way to Glen Coe. To the best of my examinations of the maps, this landscape is set in Rannoch Moor. That's definitely Loch Tulla in the foreground, and I believe the chain of mountains, or munros, is known as Black Mount. Although I'd love for someone more knowledgeable in the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands to fill in any gaps in describing the place for me!
What I do know was that the sunlight as we stood there above Loch Tulla was just astonishing. There was just enough of a break in the clouds to et the afternoon sun pour onto the loch leaving a beautiful golden color on the lake and the landscape in between the foregrounds and mountains. I already loved Scotland, but at that moment, I could imagine never leaving this beautiful place again. I dream of going back to the Highlands and Islands some day as the landscapes there are an artist's dream.
